Friday Feel-Good Story: The World’s Largest Piggy Bank Collects Donations for Animal Shelters

World's largest piggy bank collects funds for animal rescue organizations.

On a hilltop overlooking Ráquira, Colombia, stands an enormous, incredibly happy-looking pig. In fact, it’s a 29-foot-tall piggy bank! According to the Guinness World Records, it’s the largest piggy bank in the world. This gargantuan creation, constructed of local clay, was unveiled on June 13th of this year as a celebration of the region’s long history of pottery creation. Best of all, it serves an incredibly benevolent purpose: it collects donations for local animal shelters.

The Largest Piggy Bank in the World

The bank was built by artisans from the Mano del Artesano – Pueblito de Barro theme park. It’s 29 feet and 6 inches tall, and 33 feet, 11 inches long. Visitors to the theme park can climb inside this giant pig and gaze out through holes in its snout. It also has a coin slot, where guests make donations before leaving.

This Brobdingnagian piggy bank can hold up to 127,000 Colombian 1,000-peso coins. This is the equivalent of 127 million Colombian pesos. To get an idea of how much that is in other currency, it’s around $37,000 or £27,637 in loose change. As you can imagine, that kind of money can do a tremendous amount of good for animal shelters in the region.
