The Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, visited Saudi Arabia recently, marking the first official trip since 2015 when Javad Zarif, the then-Iranian foreign minister, traveled to Riyadh following King Abdullah’s demise. This visit follows the March agreement where Saudi Arabia and Iran decided to reestablish diplomatic relations, a move believed to have been facilitated by China. Oman and Iraq are rumored to have played a pivotal role in backstage negotiations. During his visit, Amirabdollahian had a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Jeddah and described their conversation as “frank, beneficial, and productive”, suggesting that efforts to mend bilateral ties are succeeding. It’s worth noting that Prince Faisal bin Farhan, the Saudi foreign minister, visited Iran in June of this year.
