The annual summit of the BRICS alliance, which consists of five major emerging nations, will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa from Aug. 22-24 amidst their growing global significance. Together, Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa contribute to over 25% of global economic production and house more than 40% of the world’s inhabitants. However, distinct national agendas and overarching geopolitical dynamics challenge the group’s ability to operate in unison.
This dynamic became evident when the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin, casting doubt over his attendance at the summit. Such an action placed South Africa in the delicate situation of possibly having to apprehend him. Ultimately, to circumvent this, both nations concurred on Putin’s virtual participation.
